Last year I interviewed an Irish woman as part of research into a found shop ledger (previous work related to this is available to view on my website). I am now experimenting with new work based on the dialogue I had with this woman. I wanted to use domestic curtains and blinds for various reasons but primarily because of the association between these objects and private/public space. Closed curtains/blinds generally reveal very little from the outside about those who inhabit the space inside, while inside the closed curtains/blinds cut off the outside world, creating a personal space. Also the old cliche “behind closed doors” is very appropriate.

I sourced the curtains in various charity shops, they have had a life of their own already but I am reworking them.

I am Emerging Associate Artist with firstsite in Colchester.  Growing Art Together – Associate Artists Residency was held in July, during which I experimented with installing the curtains and blind. This is the new work that I intend to develop further, so comments and suggestions will be much appreciated!
